Press Release

Hand-knotted floral rug in progress on loom, featuring pastel pink, yellow, and green botanical motifs on a deep plum background.

Northwest 35, designer of hand-knotted, luxury rugs with meaning and symbolism woven into them, launches a new design for their Glorious Gardens collection.

[London, 09/06/2025] A celebration of the garden, in all its forms, the collection is intended to bring inside the beauty and serenity of the natural world and, with it, the divinity it can represent. The new addition to the series, Jali Amara, will sit alongside the rather more whimsical Elysium and Flora Festiva.

Like all of Northwest 35’s rugs, Jali Amara tells a story—evoking the experience of wandering through the exquisite garden of a Mughal palace. The jali is the distinctive stone lattice screen that exists for privacy, shade, a gentle light filtering effect, and cooling in a pre-air conditioning era. While Mughal architecture produced arguably the most beautiful examples, Indian jali work has endured since the fourteenth century.

The vegetation is very much alive and thriving, with trees maturing and plants in flower. By contrast the jali—reminiscent of a glorious past—bears the weight of time. However, it possesses an unfading beauty and timelessness, Amara.

Jali Amara is inspired by memories of my many travels through Rajasthan, Agra and Fatehpur Sikri, where I have marvelled at the beauty and functionality of the jali, providing not just relief from the heat, but a moment of stillness and peace. It also represents for me a nostalgic reflection and contemporary visualisation of the surrounding gardens as they were—thriving, serene and full of life.” ~ Richa Walia (Founder and Creative Director, Northwest 35)

Jali Amara lends itself particularly well to placement under a dining table and is available in a variety of suggested colourways, or customised to specific, chosen colours, and to alternative dimensions and shapes. Pair it with a simpler second rug, featuring some of Jali Amara’s design elements, or with a runner, both hand-knotted by Northwest 35’s highly skilled artisans in luxurious New Zealand wool and Chinese silk.
